Short answer: check your UK plan, and watch what your phone connects to on the drive south.
Croatia is an EU country, so it's in every UK network's Europe zone. O2, iD Mobile, giffgaff, SMARTY and Tesco Mobile include it on eligible plans, up to a roaming cap; EE, Vodafone, Three, Sky Mobile and VOXI charge a daily fee or sell passes. The catch here is geography rather than price: the old coast road to Dubrovnik crosses into Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is outside the Europe zone on every one of them. The worked costs below price a week and a fortnight both ways.
- Local networks
- A1, Hrvatski Telekom and Telemach. Nomad lists Telemach and A1, and Airalo lists Telemach.
- Caps on included roaming
- O2 25GB, iD Mobile 30GB, SMARTY 12GB and giffgaff 5GB of your plan's data. Tesco Mobile sets no separate cap.
- The Neum corridor
- The old coast road to Dubrovnik passes through a short stretch of Bosnian territory at Neum, where your phone can latch onto a Bosnian network at non-Europe rates.
- The Pelješac Bridge
- Open since July 2022 and toll-free, it carries the main route past Neum without leaving Croatia. Most hire cars and coaches now use it.
- Islands and ferries
- Hvar, Brač and Korčula are well covered in the towns, but mid-crossing on a ferry you may drop out or pick up only a distant mainland signal.

Roaming versus an eSIM, priced for a real trip

Which UK networks include Croatia, and which charge
O2, iD Mobile, giffgaff, SMARTY and Tesco Mobile let eligible plans use their UK allowance in Croatia at no extra charge, up to each network's roaming cap. EE, Vodafone, Three, Sky Mobile and VOXI charge for each day you use your phone, or sell passes.
For a week, the passes run from £12 on Three to £16.50 on EE, and Vodafone's 15-day pass at £21 covers a fortnight for less than paying £2.75 a day. The worked costs below compare each with live eSIM prices.
Neum, the Pelješac Bridge and a bill you didn't expect
Croatia's coast is split in two by a short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. If you drive the old coast road to Dubrovnik you pass through it, and phones connect to a Bosnian network on the way. Bosnia is outside every UK network's Europe zone, and outside a Croatia-only eSIM, so data used there is charged at rest-of-world rates.
Since July 2022 the Pelješac Bridge has carried the main route past Neum without leaving Croatia, and it's toll-free, so most hire cars and coaches now use it. If your route does go through Neum, turn data roaming off for that stretch, or check that your eSIM covers Bosnia before you set out.
Islands, ferries and the national parks
The main islands have good coverage in the towns and along the coast roads, and Croatian networks reach the popular national parks. Crossing on a ferry, expect the signal to come and go, and don't count on it to load a ticket you haven't already downloaded.
If you're island-hopping, an eSIM with a single allowance for the whole trip is simpler than daily passes: you pay for the data you use rather than for each day you switch the phone on.
Setting up for Croatia
- 01Check your UK plan first
If your network includes Croatia and its roaming cap covers your trip, you may not need an eSIM at all. Your network's app shows both.
- 02Buy and install at home
Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you travel and keep the new line switched off until you land. Save the QR code or setup details in case you need to reinstall.
- 03Turn off data roaming on your UK line
Leave your UK SIM on so calls and bank texts still reach you, but switch its data roaming off so it can't run up charges.
- 04Make the eSIM your data line
Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data, turn off automatic data switching, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM only.
- 05Plan for the Bosnian stretch
If your route to Dubrovnik goes through Neum rather than over the Pelješac Bridge, switch data roaming off for that stretch. Neither your Europe roaming nor a Croatia eSIM covers a Bosnian network.

Will my phone roam onto a Bosnian network near Dubrovnik?
It can, if you take the old coast road through the Neum corridor. Bosnia is outside the Europe zone and outside a Croatia-only eSIM, so turn data roaming off there or take the toll-free Pelješac Bridge instead.
What does O2 charge for roaming in Croatia?
Nothing extra on Pay Monthly plans: Croatia is in O2's Europe Zone, so you use your UK allowance, and past 25GB of data abroad you need to buy a Bolt On.
How much data do I need for a week in Croatia?
At our everyday estimate of about 0.8GB a day, around 6GB. Light use, mostly maps and messages, needs about 3GB; heavy use with video or a hotspot, about 14GB.
Do Croatia eSIMs cover the islands?
They run on Croatian networks such as Telemach and A1, which cover the main islands' towns and coast roads. Coverage thins on ferry crossings and in the hills, so download maps and tickets before you leave.

Buy before departure, install on Wi-Fi and keep the new line switched off until arrival.

Set the travel eSIM as Mobile Data and disable data switching so your UK SIM cannot take over.

Leave the UK line on for banking texts if needed, but turn off its data roaming and avoid chargeable calls.

Things worth checking first.
Do you work out what my own network would charge?
On EE, for all 26 destinations. Across the other nine networks, for 145 more network-and-destination combinations. Everywhere else we send you to your network’s own checker rather than invent a number — usually because the network has stopped publishing a rate, or prices it against your individual account. Pick the tariff that applies to you and we work out the daily fees, the cheapest combination of passes, or the per-megabyte rate from your network’s published charges. We only claim a saving when roaming would actually cover your whole trip and everything else you asked for.
Are these prices live?
Saily’s and Nomad’s are — they come from each provider’s own feed and are marked “Live price”. Saily quotes real pounds; Nomad quotes US dollars, which we convert. Airalo prices are checked by hand and carry the date we checked them. They are already in pounds, so they need no conversion. Klook never shows a price here, because we cannot read one reliably; that link takes you to their own page.
Why does one provider show several plans?
Because more than one can fit your trip — a bigger allowance, a longer run before it expires, or unlimited data. We show each provider’s best few for your trip and tuck the rest — including any that cost more without giving you more — behind one “show more” button. Pin up to three to compare side by side.
Where do I find hotspot and speed limits?
Open “Hotspot, speed & other limits” on any plan. It covers whether you can use the phone as a hotspot, what happens when you hit a speed cap, what the fair-use rules are, when the plan starts counting down, and which local network you will be on. If it says “check plan”, the provider’s own wording was not clear enough for us to promise you either way.
Can I make normal calls on these?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs give you data only — WhatsApp and FaceTime work, but your phone number does not. If you need real calls and texts, answer “Yes” in the form and we will only recommend a plan that we have confirmed includes them.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Search for your exact model and we will check it against manufacturer guidance. Two things we cannot check for you: whether your phone is locked to a UK network, and which regional version you own — some models sold in certain countries have no eSIM at all. Confirm both before buying.
